Walking through the doors of Lymflo Therapies is a healing experience for those who have been dealing with chronic and long term illnesses. Picture yourself surrounded by colors of soft green and lavender with cozy quilts hanging on the walls, symbols of the comfort and warmth that is provided by the therapists and staff at Lymflo Therapies. You may also be greeted by Danny, a white Labrador retriever trained to work with the disabled and his companion, Fitzi, a 5.5 lbs Papillion dog with flowing butterfly ears.
"To maintain patient autonomy by providing a comprehensive education and treatment program for those at risk and those who have developed lymphatic conditions."
Lymflo Therapies Inc. was established in 1999 under the direction of Occupational Therapist Carol Johnson OTR/L with encouragement and in consultation with registered nurse, Joanna Burgess BSN. It was established to meet the needs of people who experience the effects of lymphedema and edemas resulting from compromised lymphatic function. For the first 3 years, Lymflo Therapies, Inc. was treating patients in Durham, NC on Broad Street in an office that was a converted from a 1930's bungalow. While there, the practice saw tremendous growth in the number of lymphedema patients that were seen and was able to do outreach to the medical community by providing education about the lymphatic system and proper treatment for lymphatic conditions. It is the mission and goal of Lymflo Therapies to provide for the community a warm and comfortable environment offering a comprehensive approach to the treatment of lymphedema.
Lymflo Therapies relocated to Chapel Hill, NC in Dec. 2003. This treatment facility better serves the needs of our patients and is centrally located between Durham and Chapel Hill. There are 4 active treatment rooms, a nice waiting area, and a separate, private billing area. The facility also has a small conference meeting and treatment space, Wingspan, which will accommodate 20-30 people.
The therapists at Lymflo Therapies have diverse backgrounds which are of great benefit to the team approach used in patient care. All therapists are licensed in the State of North Carolina to practice in their own specific field but have come together with a common interest in treating lymphedema. Therapists comprise training in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Nursing and Massage Therapy. All therapists have advanced training in the treatment of lymphedema including the North American Vodder School of Lymphatic Drainage and the Academy of Lymphatic Studies. Additionally, Joanna Burgess, a long term survivor of childhood cancer and a lymphedema patient, volunteers her time in educating patients concerning the treatment and care of lymphedema.
A unique benefit, to our treatment center is the ability to provide custom garment fabrication on site. The fabrication and alteration of garments is an essential component of Combined Decongestive Therapy in our practice.
